June 2019 – 30 Place de la Haute Vieille Tour, Rouen, France

This is the last post from France, although since I’m working backwards through the trip it was actually the first bar we went to. It was probably my favourite, although by a pretty narrow margin. There were some pretty fantastic pubs in France. This one also has the added bonus of being a verified venue on Untappd, which is actually how we found it.

Underdogs was crazy busy. So busy the place was full, with the lineup well out the door, and all outside tables occupied as well. The place is located at the end of a street so the overflow of people just stood outside, making for a pretty fun beer garden vibe. They did have metal playing every time I was in line inside, but you couldn’t hear the music outside.

We were there during L’Armada, this really cool festival where a bunch of sailing ships and military boats are parked along the Seine. The city was pretty much at capacity, so I assume this bar wouldn’t normally be this packed.

L’Armada

One of my favourite things about this place, which we would see all over France, was these plastic pint (and half pint!!) glasses. Generally, you pay a Euro deposit and can bring the cup back to exchange for a clean one with a new beer as often as you like. When you leave you can bring the cup back for your deposit, or keep it. (I of course always kept them. I have quite the collection from this trip, ha.) This cuts down on waste and litter, and I would love to see this make its way to events in Canada. Ha, like that would ever happen. 😀

They had a decent assortment of beers on tap, including a few French microbreweries. There was an entire wall of bottles and cans behind the bar, but I didn’t see a list anywhere and felt it was too busy to hold up the line asking about them.

Because of L’Armada they had free gift bags of Underdogs’ swag. The bartender told me about it when I asked if they sold t shirts. The staff in general were really friendly and helpful here, despite the language barrier.

My Underdogs swag bag contents.

Here is some random street art next to bar that I enjoyed. 🙂

Cheers!
