June 2019 – 24 Rue Sainte-Barbe, Saint-Malo, France
Okay, here’s another one that isn’t actually a metal bar. But I can’t be the only metalhead that also listens to Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly? They played all Celtic/Celtic punk when we were there. Interestingly we heard The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by Captain Tractor, a band from our hometown of Edmonton. Weird.

The bar itself was so cool. Stone walls, dark wood, barrels as tables. I wish I’d taken more photos. That’s something I will definitely have to do going forward
See that circle in the ground in the foreground of the picture? That’s a depressed table on the second floor that dips down into the ceiling of the main floor. I personally would be too sketched to sit at it. Or under it. 🙂 But cool nonetheless.

They had a few beers I hadn’t tried on tap, but no micros. They did have some local bottled ciders though. Cider is pretty big in Brittany.

Our reason for being is St. Malo was to be close to Mont Saint-Michel, which has been a bucket list destination for me since I was a kid.
It did not disappoint, and that early morning walk was one of the highlights of the trip. I felt sad for the people crammed onto the buses going past, as the walk was definitely the takeaway point. The island itself was a pretty little winding street lined mostly with restaurants and souvenir shops leading up to the abbey. It was still worth going to the island, but seeing that speck on the horizon growing slowly into this breathtaking structure was something I’ll never forget. If you’re able, skip the bus and hoof it!

There must be a way of letting Captain Tractor know you heard their music over there…
